Nominated for a 2012 JUNO Award as Vocal Jazz Album of the Year!
From Jobim to Norma Winstone, with stop-overs in Brazil, Eastern Europe and even at Basin Street, Fern's highly original arrangements fly gracefully on the winds of contemporary jazz. Excerpts from reviews: Fern Lindzon...explores themes of spiritual and emotional transcendence as well as the kinaesthetic experience of soaring through, around and above the natural elements of wind, sea and sky. The musical journey is an eclectic one, featuring original material, Brazilian and Yiddish compositions as well as blues and a medley of Broadway standards even so, there is a unifying creative intent on this breathtakingly beautiful album. A talented jazz singer-pianist from Toronto, Fern Lindzon has a warm and haunting voice that displays the influence of both classical and folk music along with excellent technique on the piano and an adventurous spirit. CD of the Week! In this outing, she delves into introspective jazz (think, Norma Winstone, Bill Evans). The mood is key throughout. Lindzon steers away from vocal acrobatics, and uses her voice like a painter’s brush. Her voice is airy but it is delivered in a focused stream with the control of a yogini. Lindzon has emerged as a rare and fascinating talent, combining an artful and adventurous approach to her piano and vocals, writing and arranging. Toronto’s Fern Lindzon has been steadily honing her chops in the city’s jazz scene for a number of years, and on her varied second album the classical-turned-jazz singer/pianist delivers adventurous originals as well as some artful twists on classics. Overall this disc achieves a fine balance between Lindzon’s lyrical voice and the backing of her talented band. Its upbeat feel is like a fresh message of love very much needed for the times we live in. She dazzled with fluent and elegant piano playing, especially on one classically-oriented Eastern European klezmer composition, while her vocals ranged from light-hearted to soulful with ease. Each outing reveals more of Miss Lindzon’s talent and versatility, and like a kite, she continues to soar. Selected complete reviews can be found here. |

Fern Lindzon’s debut jazz recording, Moments Like These, was released earlier this year to critical acclaim. This CD of duets with, in turn, Don Thompson on vibes, George Koller on bass and Reg Schwager on guitar, features her as a pianist, vocalist, composer, lyricist and arranger. Moments Like These has been aired many times on radio stations across Canada.
Excerpts from reviews: Clearly Fern Lindzon deserves to be better known on this side of the Canadian border. Moments Like These is a keeper. Each piece is musically shaped with great warmth and directness. Fern Lindzon revealed the breadth of her talents as both singer and pianist with 2008’s Moments Like These, a collection of thoughtful duets with George Koller, Reg Schwager and Don Thompson.
A tasteful collection of superior lyrics and melodies. Sensational! The name is new, the CD is great! A recent acquisition from Fern Lindzon, a pianist/singer from Toronto whose debut release is very impressive, performing duets with some heavy T.O. players - Don Thompson (on vibes), Reg Schwager and George Koller - and definitely holding her own, highly recommended!" Interesting how such a basic set of instruments can create such divergent thoughts and feelings. Lindzon achieves a sense of intimacy on this recording that is pleasing and rare Inspired by Ella Moments Like These is a welcome introduction to the artistry of Fern Lindzon. And especially for those not familiar with her work, have a listen, immerse yourself in the music, and seize the moments that this album offers. Moments like these don't occur very often. Sultry vocal-jazz stylings of another top-notch Toronto-based pianist. Complete reviews can be found here. |

…Then there's the Yiddish classic Chiribim…the middle section is infused with great jazz solos by saxophonist Jane Fair and pianist Fern Lindzon…I must mention the outstanding rhythm section…These ladies are terrific! They shift between swing, bulgar, Latin, and contemporary jazz with ease and absolutely nail each style…I really liked the musical arrangements of Fern Lindzon, who has a great understanding of the varied musical styles on the album.

Not to be missed is Tisch Nign II, which stands out as a short, sad and beautiful divergent piano composition by Lindzon and should be listened to and absorbed with eyes closed. Andy Levy-Ajzenkpf, Lithuanian Empire CD a cause for celebration, Canadian Jewish News, August 2007 “…beautiful and pensive hard-bop style jazz piano…Fern Lindzon’s solo performance begins with a short and subtle doina followed by a lovely classical style arrangement with hints of Shostakovitch’s innovative harmonic pairing…great solos by Fern on piano. It’s perfect.” |
